The Youth Health Promotion Model

Our model for promoting young people’s health is based on the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion.  The guiding principles in the model give a foundation for effectively promoting young people’s health and addressing health inequities among groups of youth. The five actions and two cross-cutting strategies from the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion can be used by community and school leaders to strengthen protective factors, reduce risk factors, and facilitate access to the determinants of health and determinants of mental health.  Strengthened protective factors and greater access to these determinants creates the conditions for positive mental health and reduces the likelihood of risk-taking behaviours among youth.  Even if you can only use one of the five actions, you can maximize your efforts by using youth engagement and focusing on social inclusion.

The actions and strategies in this model are described in the menu on the right.
